The Florida plumbing license exam is really two open book exams. Plumbing trade knowledge runs as two paper sessions in a single day, 110 multiple choice questions plus five isometric drawings you have to draw yourself, scored out of 160 points, and 112 points passes. Business and Finance is a separate computer exam.
Open book sounds like a gift until you meet the clock. The pages ranking for this search cannot agree on how many exams there even are, which is a poor start when the answer decides how many books you buy. Everything below was read from the vendor and the rules on 19 September 2026.
How many exams does a Florida plumbing contractor actually sit?
Two. There is the Plumbing General Trade Knowledge examination, and there is the Business and Financial Management examination that every construction licence category in Florida has to pass. They are not sat the same way and they are not even sat in the same kind of room.
Trade knowledge is still paper and pencil. Professional Testing, Inc., the vendor the state contracts to run these examinations, states that plumbing trade knowledge is administered in paper and pencil format in Orlando only. Its published plumbing dates, read on 19 September 2026, were 13 October 2026 with an application deadline of 13 September 2026, 9 December 2026 with a deadline of 8 November 2026, then 14 April 2027 and 3 June 2027. The October sitting has therefore already closed, which is the most expensive detail on this page. Business and Finance is computer based and runs on its own calendar.
| Plumbing General Trade Knowledge | Business and Financial Management | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Paper and pencil, Orlando only, a few fixed dates a year (Professional Testing) | Computer based at a test centre, booked when you like |
| Sessions | Two in one day, morning and afternoon | One |
| Questions | 45 questions plus 5 isometric drawings in the morning, 65 questions in the afternoon | 120 scored questions, reported as 125 delivered with 5 unscored pilot items |
| Scored out of | 160 points | 120 questions |
| To pass | 112 of 160 | 84 of 120, which is the same 70 percent |
| Open book | Yes, approved references only (DBPR reference lists) | Yes, approved references only |
| Deadline | Application received at least 30 days before the date (vendor instructions) | No fixed sitting date to miss |
The three exams claim you will see repeated is a miscount. There are two examinations, and one of them is split across two sessions, which is not the same thing at all.
What is on the trade knowledge exam, and how is it scored?
The morning session carries 45 equally weighted questions and the five isometric drawings. The afternoon session carries 65 equally weighted questions. That is 110 multiple choice questions, each worth one point, and five drawings worth ten points each, which adds up to 160 possible points. You need 112, the familiar 70 percent.
Session length is where the verification runs out. Prep pages consistently quote four hours and thirty minutes per session with reporting times of 7:00 and 13:00, but the candidate information booklet that would settle it refused every automated retrieval we tried on 19 September 2026. Treat that as commonly quoted rather than confirmed, and check your own admission notice, which is the only document that governs your sitting.
Whether the plumbing paper carries unscored pilot questions the way the computer based exams do is also unconfirmed. On the computer side the arithmetic is tidy: 125 questions delivered, 5 pilot items that do not count, 120 scored, 84 to pass. That reconciles the two different question counts quoted for the Business and Finance exam. Neither is wrong; they count different things.

What exactly are the five isometric drawings?
This is the part of the Florida plumbing license exam that nothing else in contractor licensing prepares you for, and the part the ranking pages skate over fastest. An isometric drawing is a pipe layout drawn on three axes at thirty degrees, so drain, waste, vent and fixture connections are all visible in one picture. You are not picking the right drawing from four options. You are drawing it.
They are marked by people, not a machine. The page currently ranking first for this search states that the drawings are graded by teams of three licensed plumbing contractors against criteria including legibility, orientation, flow, angles, piping, labelling, vents and fixtures. Which is a long way of saying a stranger has to read your pencil work.
Now do the arithmetic nobody puts in front of you. Five drawings at ten points each is 50 of the 160 points, a little over 31 percent of the exam. Answer all 110 multiple choice questions correctly and leave every drawing blank and you score 110 out of 160, or 68.75 percent, failing by two points. A perfect written paper does not carry you. The drawings are not a bonus round.
Which books may you take in, and which list applies to you?
Florida runs its approved reference lists by calendar year and by format. The DBPR construction examination reference lists page, read on 19 September 2026, carried separate lists effective 1 January 2026 and 1 January 2025, split between computer based testing and pencil and paper, with this instruction to candidates: bring only the references allowed for that day, because anything else is stored along the wall or in lockers at the candidate’s own risk.
Two traps live in that sentence. The format split matters more for plumbing than for anything else, because your two exams sit in different formats on different days and the approved list is not the same for both. The other is the edition year, covered in the edition trap: last year’s approved book is this year’s unapproved book, and it goes in the locker with your lunch.
The plumbing list itself refused automated retrieval from four directions on 19 September 2026, so we will not print a book list here and invite you to buy from it. Titles circulating for 2026 include the Florida Building Code Plumbing, the Plumber’s Handbook, Mathematics for Plumbers and Pipefitters, the OSHA construction standards and Chapter 64E-6 of the Florida Administrative Code. Check every title, edition and year against the official list for your own sitting before you spend anything. What may be brought in is covered in our guide to the approved books, and what you may do to those books in tabs, highlighting and notes.

What does the Florida plumbing license exam cost?
Less confidently than anyone selling you a course will tell you. Neither the vendor’s own application instructions nor the state examination pages publish a dollar figure where a candidate can simply read it.
What is in circulation, read on 19 September 2026: a registration fee of $135 with the examination vendor and $80 for each examination, both quoted on the ServiceTitan licensing guide; a retake commonly quoted at $295 elsewhere; and the books. On books there is one dated figure from a candidate rather than a seller, in a ContractorTalk thread begun in September 2021, putting the plumbing set at $1,251. Prices have moved since. Book costs across the trades are broken down separately.
The deadline is firmer than the fees. Applications must be received by the examination vendor no later than 30 days before the examination date. Miss it and the next plumbing sitting is months away, not weeks.
What do people who have sat these exams actually report?
Testimony, not evidence. These are forum accounts, they are dated, and they are here because the official material is silent on the one thing candidates keep saying decides the result.
On 31 July 2022 a contractor posted a compilation of Florida examination results covering January 2021 to June 2022 in a ContractorTalk thread on failure rates. For the Residential trade examination, on a sample he acknowledged was under 100 results, he reported 85 percent failing the first attempt and 74 percent failing across first and second combined. For Business and Finance, on over 12,000 results, he reported 47 percent failing the first attempt and 66 percent failing the second. Second attempts did worse than first attempts, which is the finding that should stop you short.
In the September 2021 plumbing licence thread, a candidate who already held a building contractor licence described Florida treating a sink replacement as plumbing work, and put the reference book set at $1,251. The theme across that thread and the surrounding ContractorTalk discussions is blunt: passing is less about knowing plumbing than about knowing which approved book holds the answer, and finding it before the clock runs out. One poster there reports scoring 55, then 63.8, against the 70 needed, though we could not date that post, so read it as colour rather than data.
We read two threads in full and the search summaries of roughly eight more, and the range is not uniform. The 2022 poster reads his numbers as proof that candidates are unqualified. The competing reading, supported by the same threads, is that an open book exam under time pressure measures navigation as much as competence. Both are opinions about one set of figures covering 2021 and 2022, with nothing more recent compiled since. Neither the rules nor the vendor publish any pass rate at all, so nobody arguing this is arguing from an official statistic, the prep companies quoting you confident percentages included. If you have been through it once already, what to do after failing a part covers where the 30 days should go.
Is a state certified plumbing contractor the same as a master plumber?
No, and the distinction costs people work. Under section 489.105 of the Florida Statutes, a certified contractor holds a certificate of competency issued by the department and may contract in any jurisdiction in the state without meeting that jurisdiction’s competency requirements. A registered contractor has met the competency requirements of one jurisdiction and may contract only there.
The statutory scope is wide: sanitary and storm drainage, venting, water supply, septic tanks, wells, pool piping, irrigation, solar water heating, medical gas, fire line standpipes and sprinklers to the extent the law allows, and fuel piping. Journeyman and master plumber cards are a different animal, issued by counties on their own terms, which is why Palm Beach County and Miami Dade County do not look alike. The two state routes are compared in registered versus certified.
Where do the ranking pages disagree with the rules?
Three places, and one of them can cost you everything you have already passed.
| Claim you will meet | What the source actually says |
|---|---|
| The plumbing route is three separate exams | Two examinations. Trade knowledge is one exam in two sessions on one day (Professional Testing) |
| The Business and Finance exam is 120 questions | 120 scored questions is right, and 125 delivered is also right, because 5 are unscored pilot items |
| Nothing at all about a deadline on the parts you have passed | Every part must be passed within four years of the first attempt, after which all past scores are invalid (Fla. Admin. Code R. 61G4-16.009) |
That four year rule is the one to write down. The same rule says a candidate retakes only the tests they failed or failed to appear for, the reassuring half everyone quotes, and then sets a four year window on the whole set, which almost nobody does. Pass Business and Finance, let the plumbing paper drift for four years, and you have lost the Business and Finance pass too. The board rule governing these examinations was last amended on 16 December 2024. On why open book is not the same as easy, see our piece on the open book format.
Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to pass all the parts of the Florida plumbing exam?
Four years from your first attempt. Fla. Admin. Code R. 61G4-16.009 states that a candidate must pass all tests within four years of the first attempt, after which all past test scores are considered invalid.
Do I have to retake the parts I already passed?
No. The same rule provides that a candidate retakes only the tests they failed or failed to appear for. Passed parts stand, subject to that four year window.
How far ahead do I have to apply for the plumbing trade knowledge exam?
Completed applications must be received by the examination vendor no later than 30 days before the examination date. Because plumbing sits only a few times a year, missing a deadline means waiting months rather than weeks.
Where and how often is the plumbing trade knowledge exam held?
In Orlando only, in paper and pencil format. The dates published by the examination vendor on 19 September 2026 were 13 October 2026, 9 December 2026, 14 April 2027 and 3 June 2027.
Can I write my own notes in the reference books I take in?
No. Permanent tabs and highlighting or underlining are allowed on approved references. Written notes are not, and a book carrying them can be refused at the door. Check the rule for your own sitting rather than what a classmate did last year.
Is the Business and Finance exam the same one other contractors take?
Yes. Business and Financial Management is common to Florida construction licence categories, so a plumbing candidate sits the same computer based paper as a roofing or general contractor candidate. Only the trade knowledge half is specific to plumbing.
