No. A full general contractor set lists at about $1,695 today, not $2,500, and if you are only sitting Business and Finance the approved list runs to six references with bundles from roughly $295. What inflates the bill is buying trade books for exams you are not taking.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2,500 dollar number gets repeated because it was true of somebody’s list price once and nobody rechecked. Prices on this market move, and the people publishing the figure are usually the people selling the books. So here is what the packages list for today, and more usefully, what the state actually lets you carry into each room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where does the 2,500 dollar figure come from?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

From complete trade sets. A general contractor set bundles roughly eighteen titles: the Florida Building Code volumes, the OSHA construction standard, the Contractors Manual, the AIA contract documents and a handful of trade references. Sold together, priced together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The figure closest to 2,500 dollars is the rental package, and it is not a book price at all. It is books plus a prep course, and 1,300 of it comes back if you return the set in condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which books does each exam actually let you carry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Florida runs three parts, and each part has its own reference list published by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. That is the entire cost question in one sentence: you do not need a set, you need the list for the part you are sitting. We go through the current list in detail in which books you may actually carry in<\/a>, and the exam structure in how many exams there are and what is on each<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Business and Finance list is short. The current list, valid January 2026 to December 2026<\/a> runs to six references and no more: Florida Statutes Chapter 455, 2025 (R1), Builder’s Guide to Accounting, 2001 (R37), the Contractors Manual (R50), and the three AIA documents A201 and A401 of 2017 and A701 of 2018 (R5, R6, R7). That is it. Nothing about roofing, nothing about concrete, no code volumes. The page heading above the table reads, in capitals, only these books maybe brought into the testing room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Contract Administration and Project Management list<\/a> for general, building and residential candidates is the long one: the 2023 Florida Building Code volumes, the OSHA construction standard at 29 CFR 1926 of 1 July 2025, Principles and Practices of Commercial Construction in its 11th edition of 2024, Energy Efficient Building Construction in Florida, 2024, the BCSI truss bracing guide, the Contractors Manual, and the same AIA trio. Sitting all three parts means both lists. Re sitting one failed part means one. Both lists sit behind the reference lists page<\/a> on the department’s site, free to read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why does a complete set contain books you cannot take into the exam room?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the part almost nothing online tells you. The official reference list does not only name allowed books. It carries a second section, headed as suggested study references, which states plainly that those titles may not be brought into the testing room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One general contractor set advertised at 1,695 dollars lists all five, and it names Walker’s as the 33rd edition of 2024 where the state list calls for the 32nd. Lists are also reissued for each validity window and titles move between the allowed and suggested sections, so pull the list for your own test window before you buy. If a seller says a book is allowed, check the list rather than the invoice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can any of it be printed for free?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some of it, yes. Against Florida Statutes Chapter 455 the Business and Finance list carries a note, in red, that a bound PDF version of that reference may be brought into the test centers for use on the exam, and it links straight to the free text on the Florida Senate site. That is one of your six references for the price of printing and binding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The binding rule is where people trip. References must be bound and stay bound for the whole exam. PDF copies must be bound with ring binders, brads, plastic snap binders, spiral notebooks or screw posts. Staples do not count, and loose printouts in a folder are not a bound reference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is it cheaper to buy the books separately?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For Business and Finance, no, and that surprises people who assume the bundle is the markup. The AIA sells its contract documents near list price singly, and three of them are on the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trade side flips. If you already own current Florida Building Code volumes because you work from them, buying the three or four titles you are missing beats a 1,695 dollar set comfortably. Check your shelf against the list before assuming you start from zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Should you buy, rent, or buy pre marked?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

All three are defensible, and the deciding variable is not price. It is what happens if you fail a part, which enough people do that it is worth planning for. The argument for marking your own books is not thrift. Tabbing a reference teaches you where things live, which is the skill an open book exam actually tests. Pre marked books buy you someone else’s map: fine if you are short of time, less fine if you were counting on the marking to teach you the book. What does the exam itself cost on top of the books?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Registration goes through Professional Testing, Inc. on 407-264-0562, not through a prep company, and applications and fees are due 30 days before the examination date. Figures circulating for the registration fee and the per part site fee are around $135 and $80, but we could not confirm those against a primary published schedule, so confirm them when you register rather than budgeting off this page. A retake is commonly reported at $295, and the DBPR application fee is separate again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
