Its job is to tell you what you do not know and where you are slow, so you can go and fix those things. Most people use it as a scoreboard instead, which feels productive and teaches very little.

The difference shows up on exam day. People who scored well in practice and then struggled almost always practised in conditions that flattered them: no clock, unlimited lookups, and no review of what they got wrong.

What a practice test is actually for

Three things, in order of value.

Finding gaps. Every wrong answer is a specific thing you do not know, and it is worth more than the twenty you got right.

Building navigation speed. On an open book exam, knowing where the answer lives is a separate skill from knowing the answer, and it is the one that runs you out of time.

Calibrating pace. Learning what a minute and a half per question feels like, so you recognise when you are behind before it is too late to recover.

Scoring is not on that list. The score is a byproduct that tells you roughly whether you are close. What you do with the wrong answers is the entire value.

Find out where you actually stand, in 10 questions

Real exam style, instant answers, about two minutes. Most people are surprised, in both directions. It is the fastest way to turn a vague worry about being ready into something you can act on.

 Take the free diagnostic

How to run one properly

Set a timer to the real exam’s per question pace. Not roughly, exactly.

Use only the books you can actually bring, tabbed exactly as they will be tabbed on the day.

Do not stop, do not look things up afterwards mid test, do not take a break in the middle.

Mark every question you were unsure about, even the ones you got right. A lucky guess is a gap.

Then, and this is the part people skip, spend longer reviewing than you spent taking it.

If a test takes you an hour and the review takes you twenty minutes, you have wasted most of the hour. Reverse those numbers. The test generates the information and the review is where you actually learn anything.

Untimed practice measures knowledge. It sounds laborious and it takes about ninety seconds per question once you have the habit.

Which book was this in? If you did not know, that is a navigation gap.

Could I have found it in time? If not, that is a tabbing problem, not a knowledge problem.

Did I misread the question? A surprising share of wrong answers are comprehension rather than content, particularly on questions with a negative in them.

Do I now understand why the right answer is right? Not just what it was. Recognising the answer next time is not the same as being able to derive it.

Patterns emerge within two or three tests. Most people find their errors cluster in one or two areas, which turns a vague sense of being underprepared into a specific list of things to work on.

What a good practice question looks like

Good

Poor

Requires a lookup in an approved reference

Answerable from general knowledge alone

Written against the code edition in force

Written against a superseded edition

Explains why the answer is right

Gives a letter and nothing else

Similar length and phrasing to the real exam

Much shorter or much simpler

Includes plausible distractors

Three obviously wrong options

That last row matters more than it looks. A question with three silly options can be answered by elimination without knowing anything, so it inflates your score and teaches you nothing. Real exam distractors are the answers you get when you make a specific common mistake.

Ten questions written the way the real ones are

Everything above describes what a good practice question looks like. These are ten of them, with the reasoning explained after each answer, so a wrong one teaches you something instead of just scoring you.

 Try the 10 question check

The edition trap in free material

Free practice questions are abundant and a meaningful share of them are out of date. A question written against a previous code edition can be confidently, specifically wrong, and because it comes with an authoritative looking explanation you will believe it.

Check what edition any material was written for before you trust it. the approved book list covers which editions matter for the Florida exams, and the same caution applies to any question bank you use.

Build your own question bank

The most useful study material you will have by the end is the one you wrote yourself, and almost nobody does this.

Every time you get a question wrong, write your own version of it: same concept, different numbers or a different scenario. It takes two minutes. Doing that converts a question you have now memorised the answer to into one that still tests you, and the act of writing it forces you to understand the underlying rule rather than the specific answer.

Keep a single document, organised by which reference book the answer lives in.

For each entry: your rewritten question, the answer, and the exact section it came from.

Re-test yourself on that document weekly rather than on fresh material.

By exam week it is a precise map of your own weaknesses, which no commercial question bank can be.

The week before, and the day itself

Preparation stops being about content in the last week. It should be about conditions.

Do at least one full length timed test in the final week, with the actual books, packed the way you will pack them.

Stop learning new material two or three days out. Anything genuinely new at that point is more likely to confuse than to help.

Check your book editions one final time against the current approved list. People discover the wrong edition on the morning, and there is no fixing it then.

Sleep matters more than one more hour of revision, and the trade off is not close.

On the day itself, the single highest value habit is the one most people skip: read every question twice before looking at the options. A large share of avoidable errors are misreadings, particularly on questions containing a negative such as which of these is not permitted.

Knowing when you are ready

Not a score in isolation. Readiness is three things together.

Consistently above the pass mark on timed tests, in real conditions, more than once.

Finishing with time in hand rather than finishing exactly on the buzzer.

Wrong answers scattered rather than clustered, which means no remaining systematic gap.

If you are hitting all three, sit the exam. If you are hitting the first but not the second, you have a navigation problem and more content study will not fix it. what open book really means covers why speed is the binding constraint on these exams.

And if it goes badly anyway, what happens if you fail covers the retake process, which is less punitive than the anticipation suggests.

Still not sure whether you are ready?

That is exactly what the diagnostic is for. Ten questions, honest scoring, and a read on which areas are costing you marks. Far better than sitting the real exam to find out.

 Check if you are ready

Frequently asked questions

How many practice tests should I do?

Fewer than you think, analysed harder than you think.
