The DBPR <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.myfloridalicense.com\/servop\/testing\/documents\/const_cib.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Candidate Information Booklet for construction licensure examinations<\/a> permits only permanently attached tabs and says Post-it notes, pull-off labels and removable tabs must come out of your books before you arrive. The 2026 reference lists then name the brand: moveable tabs, Post-it Flags given as the example, are not allowed. The booklet also hands you the test to run at home. If a tab can be removed without damage to the page, it counts as removable and will not be accepted, however permanent the packet claimed it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It follows the same logic as the rest of the rule. Confirm for your own test date.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-if-a-second-hand-book-already-has-notes-in-it\">What if a second hand book already has notes in it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buying used copies of the approved references is a sensible way to cut the cost, but a previous owner&#8217;s pencil in the margin is still a written note. The 2026 reference lists say handwritten and typewritten notes are not allowed, and that existing handwritten notes must be blackened out or removed completely by the candidate so they cannot be read. Budget an evening and a thick black marker for any used book, and do it at home rather than in the car park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you tab a used copy at all, make sure it is the printing your exam actually lists, because <a href=\"https:\/\/passcontractorexam.com\/articles\/florida-contractor-exam-edition-trap\/\">the edition trap on Florida reference lists<\/a> catches people who tab the wrong edition very neatly. The booklet allows 6.5 hours for 120 scored Business and Finance questions, which is 3.25 minutes each before any pilot questions, and 4.5 hours for the 60 scored questions on each general contractor Contract Administration and Project Management part, 4.5 minutes each. Tabs are the mechanism that turns a pile of approved references into something usable at that pace. The book&#8217;s own table of contents already organises by chapter, and that is not the axis you will be searching along under pressure. What you want is a tab that answers where do I go when the question is about this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>Tab the tables you know you will need, not the chapters they sit in.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Tab by the language the exam uses rather than the language the book uses, where those differ.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Use fewer, better tabs. Forty tabs is a second index you also have to search.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Highlight sparingly. A page that is entirely yellow contains no information about where to look.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-do-candidates-who-tabbed-their-books-report\">What do candidates who tabbed their books report?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We read one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Contractor\/comments\/1slcbud\/finally_getting_my_florida_gc_license_after_years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">r\/Contractor thread<\/a> from April 2026 in full, 44 comments under a Florida general contractor candidate&#8217;s post. This is what people report, not evidence, and we left out replies that read as prep course promotion. Five accounts carry the substance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\n<li>A commenter in April 2026 said tabs marking which sections dealt with which trades helped a lot.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>A Central Florida candidate, April 2026, said Saturday classes and learning the tables of contents got them above 90 on all three parts first time; the school sold tabs.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>Another, April 2026, said Business and Finance took three attempts: no tabs at first, then a tabbing course, aiming to know where to go rather than memorise the book.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>One reply said to buy a tabbed book and claimed a first time pass with no studying. Others pushed back that open book is for when you are stuck.<\/li>\n\n\n<li>In August 2026 a commenter said practising lookups with the books open made the biggest difference on a Business and Finance retake.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The range runs from tabs as the whole strategy to tabs as useless without study. The middle agrees with the rules: a tab can only point, so it is worth exactly what you know about where it points. No account mentioned a book being refused at check in, but one thread is a pattern of what candidates say, not a measure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"are-pre-tabbed-books-allowed-and-are-they-worth-it\">Are pre-tabbed books allowed, and are they worth it?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several prep companies sell professionally pre-tabbed and pre-highlighted versions of the approved references, and these are permitted, since tabs and highlighting are permitted regardless of who applied them. Bought tabs face the same two tests: permanently attached, headings only. Run the pull test the day a set arrives, while a refund is easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether they are worth the premium is a genuine question rather than a rhetorical one. The case for is time saved and tabs designed by people who know the exam. Its What not to Bring section says unauthorized supplies &#8220;will be subject to removal by the Department&#8217;s representative at the examination site&#8221;, and it asks for removable tabs to come out before you arrive &#8220;to avoid delays&#8221;. Neither document says more about a book with notes, so we will not invent a scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anything outside the rules can be taken away, and a book you spent weeks tabbing is the last thing you want separated from you.
