Budget $135 plus $80 for every test part you sit.

Almost every page ranking for this question is a prep school with a course to sell, and a course seller has no reason to mention that the hard part is paperwork rather than trigonometry. Two organisations are involved, they do not do the same job, and the order matters.

Who actually handles Florida general contractor exam registration?

The Department of Business and Professional Regulation does not run the exam itself. It contracts the work out, and it splits it. Professional Testing, Inc. is the examination development vendor: it registers candidates, writes the questions and scores the results. Its registration portal is floridaexam.com and its phone number is 407-264-0562. Pearson VUE is the administration vendor: it owns the test centres and the booking calendar.

This is why people lose weeks. They find Pearson VUE first, which is the name on every testing centre in the state, try to book a Florida contractor exam, and cannot, because Pearson VUE has never heard of them. Nothing is broken. You are simply at the wrong vendor.

Step

Vendor

What happens

Apply and pay

Professional Testing, Inc.

Application and fees submitted at floridaexam.com

Approval

Professional Testing, Inc.

Eligibility reviewed, candidate approved

Authorisation to test

Pearson VUE

Email arrives with a candidate ID

Book the seat

Pearson VUE

Appointment chosen from live availability

Sit the exam

Pearson VUE

Computer based, at a test centre

Scoring

Professional Testing, Inc.

Results produced and reported

Licence application

Florida DBPR

Separate process, after you pass

Professional Testing, Inc. states the boundary plainly: it “does not grant licenses or make decisions about a candidate’s eligibility for licensure”. The rule’s total assumes a candidate sitting two parts. A certified general contractor candidate sits three: Business and Finance, Contract Administration and Project Management. At $80 per test administered that comes to $415, not $335. Confirm your own total on the payment screen before you submit it, because the rule states the fees are nonrefundable.

The same arithmetic explains a number that circulates constantly and is almost never sourced. The retake fee is “commonly quoted at $295”, and $295 is $135 plus two tests at $80. That is the reexamination fee for two failed parts, not for one. A single failed part comes to $135 plus $80, or $215, on the fees the rule sets. We have quoted the $295 figure ourselves on our page about failing a part, and it is only right for the two part case. Either way you pay the vendor, not the department, as the DBPR’s own answer on retakes puts it: “You do not have to reapply, or pay any additional fees to the department. You will be required to pay the testing vendor fee again upon examination.”

One wrinkle worth carrying to the payment page. The department’s scheduling answer describes “$135.00 exam application fee, plus an $80.00 exam administration fee” in the context of one specific trade knowledge examination, while the fee rule says $80 for each test administered. Read the itemised total before you confirm it, and call Professional Testing, Inc. on 407-264-0562 if it does not match.

How long does it take from applying to sitting the exam?

The state gives one hard figure here and the internet gives several soft ones. The hard figure: candidates become eligible to schedule within 72 hours after Professional Testing, Inc. approves the application. What happens before that approval is the part nobody publishes. Figures of seven to ten business days circulate widely for the review itself, and we could not trace them to any official DBPR or vendor publication, so treat them as reported rather than promised.

Stage

How long

Confirmed?

Application submitted to Professional Testing, Inc.

Same day, online

Yes, vendor portal

Eligibility review and approval

Commonly reported as 7 to 10 business days

No official source found

Approval to scheduling eligibility

Within 72 hours of approval

Yes, DBPR examination information

Authorisation to test email from Pearson VUE

On processing of the application

Yes, DBPR answer 584

Booking a seat

Up to one calendar day before you wish to test, subject to availability

Yes, Pearson VUE

So the controllable part of the wait is small and the uncontrollable part is the review. Nothing you do after submitting speeds it up. What slows it down is a deficient application: missing proof, a box ticked that should not have been, a document that never arrived.

Navigating the timeline from application to exam day takes careful planning.

Does the exam still have fixed dates and a 30 day deadline?

This is where the official sources disagree with each other, and it is worth knowing which one to believe.

Rule 61G4-16.009, effective 26 August 2024, still says an original application for examination “must be received by the examination vendor at least thirty (30) days prior to the administration of the examination the applicant wishes to take”. Professional Testing, Inc. still warns on its own page: “Please register early. Do not wait until the deadline to apply! Sites have been filling up and once all test sites are full, candidates will be moved to the next examination date.”

Both sentences describe a world of fixed examination dates and finite seats. That world is gone. Construction examinations are now administered in computer based format on a daily basis at test sites, and Pearson VUE lets you schedule up to one calendar day before you wish to test, subject to availability. There is no next examination date to be moved to, because there is no examination date. Plan around the review, which is the only genuinely slow step, and book the seat when the authorisation arrives.

Does the 30 day rule mean you must wait 30 days to retake?

No, and this is the single most repeated error about Florida retakes. Page after page states flatly that you must wait 30 days between attempts. Read the rule and no such waiting period exists.

What rule 61G4-16.009 actually says is that a candidate who fails “must submit an application to retake the certification examination to the examination vendor no less than thirty (30) days prior to the administration of the examination the candidate wishes to take provided he or she pays all appropriate fees”. That is the same application deadline applied to retakes. It is a deadline before the exam, not a cooling off period after one. The 30 day retake wait looks very much like that sentence, read quickly.

We could not find a rule imposing a minimum interval between attempts. In practice the review and the vendor’s processing may well put a month between your attempts anyway, so confirm the position with Professional Testing, Inc. for your own category rather than accepting the 30 days as law.

Two rules from the same text are not in doubt, and the department confirms both. You retake only the parts you failed: “A candidate shall be required to retake only the tests on which he or she failed to achieve a passing score or failed to appear to take when scheduled.” And the clock runs out. A candidate must pass all tests within four years of the first attempt, after which all past scores are considered invalid and every part must be taken again. Our guide to failing a part covers what to do with the gap.

What happens if you reschedule or miss the appointment?

These are the rules that cost money, so they are worth reading twice.

Situation

Rule

Cost

Reschedule or cancel with time to spare

Must be done two full calendar days before the test date

No penalty

Reschedule or cancel inside two calendar days

Below the Pearson VUE deadline

Exam fees may be forfeited

Fail to appear

Rule 61G4-16.009: a candidate who “fails to appear for a scheduled test shall be required to pay the reexamination fee”

$135 plus $80 per test rebooked

Fail a part

Retake only the failed part, reapply to the vendor

$135 plus $80 per test rebooked

Note the quiet symmetry in the rule: not showing up is treated exactly like failing. The same sentence that lists the tests you must retake covers the ones you “failed to appear to take when scheduled”. A missed appointment is not a neutral event you reschedule out of, it is a failed part with a fee attached. Set the alarm.

To reschedule, you go back to the vendor. The department’s instruction is blunt: “You must contact the testing vendor to reschedule a date and time.” Pearson VUE is on 888-204-6230, and its Florida construction page states that “to cancel or reschedule a test without any penalty it needs to be done two full calendar days before the test”.

What are you actually booking when you register?

All three parts are open book and multiple choice. Business and Finance is 125 questions over 6.5 hours. Contract Administration and Project Management are 65 questions over 4 hours 45 minutes each. Each paper carries five ungraded pilot questions, so five of the questions you agonise over do not count and you will never know which.

Registering for three parts means three separate appointments, three $80 administration fees and three sittings. Our breakdown of what each exam part contains is the place to work out which parts your category requires. Before you book, read what the open book format really means for your preparation, because it is not the gift it sounds like, and check which editions of the approved reference books apply to your test date. That list is maintained by the DBPR and differs by licence category, and turning up with last year’s edition is an expensive way to find out.

One last thing, because the marketing around this exam gets loud. No course can register you, no course can shorten the review, and no legitimate provider can guarantee a result. A guaranteed pass banner is selling you a refund policy with better branding.

Verified on 20 September 2026

Fees and the reexamination rule come from the current text of rules 61G4-12.009 and 61G4-16.009, the latter effective 26 August 2024. The 72 hour scheduling eligibility, the daily computer based administration and the vendor split were confirmed against the DBPR’s published answers. The two calendar day reschedule deadline and the one calendar day booking window were confirmed on Pearson VUE’s Florida construction page. The seven to ten business day review time could not be confirmed against any official source. Pass rates by part are not published by the DBPR in any form we could locate, so any percentage quoted for these exams, including the familiar 50, 55 and 40, is an estimate from a prep provider rather than a statistic.

Frequently asked questions

Can I register for the Florida general contractor exam directly with Pearson VUE?

No. Registration goes through Professional Testing, Inc. at floridaexam.com or on 407-264-0562.
