Only reference materials on the DBPR approved list may be brought into a Florida contractor examination, and no other references are permitted at the site.<\/strong> The list is maintained by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation, it is published, and it differs by licence category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Search this question and every result is a shop. That is not a conspiracy, it is just what happens when the people with the strongest commercial reason to rank are the ones selling book bundles. The list itself costs nothing to look at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where the official list actually lives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The approved reference materials list is published by the DBPR through MyFloridaLicense, on the construction examinations pages. The examinations themselves are administered by Professional Testing, Inc., who can be reached on 407-264-0562 for questions about a specific examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two things to establish before you buy anything:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Your exact licence category.<\/strong> The approved list for a General Contractor is not the list for a Roofing or Mechanical Contractor. Bundles are sold per category and it is possible to buy the wrong one.<\/li>\n\n\n
  2. The list that applies to your test date.<\/strong> Reference lists are updated. The relevant question is not what the list says today but what it says for the date you are booked to sit.<\/li>\n\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The edition problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    This is the most expensive avoidable mistake in the whole process, and it is quietly common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Approved reference lists specify editions, and the penalty for getting one wrong is not the penalty most candidates picture. The DBPR Business and Finance reference list in force from January 2026 to December 2026 is explicit about it: editions earlier or later than those listed can be brought to the examination site, but at your own risk, and only one copy of each reference is allowed in. Nobody turns you away at the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That is the worse outcome, not the kinder one. You sit down with a book that looks right, find the correct section, and copy out a figure that a later code revision changed. The answer is marked wrong, nothing on the screen tells you why, and you find out when the result arrives weeks later. Which list applies to your test date has a definite answer, and which reference list applies to your exam date<\/a> works through the three things you have to match: effective date, licence category and examination format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Vendor product pages are not always current on this, because updating a listing costs the vendor money and being slightly out of date rarely costs them a sale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The check is simple and it is worth doing even if you have already bought: open the current DBPR list, and compare edition and year against the actual books you own. Not against what the invoice said. Against the books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Complete sets are advertised well into four figures, and for some candidates that is the right purchase. For others it is not, and the question is worth asking properly rather than assumed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
